Home / Understanding Your Roof
A roof’s anatomy includes several key components, each crucial for stability and protection. The roof covering, often made of tiles, is the outermost layer that shields against weather. Beneath it, the roof decking provides support, while rafters or trusses form the main structural framework. Between the covering and decking is an underlayment for added waterproofing. Other important parts are the ridge which is the top edge where two roof planes meet, valleys which are the intersections of roof slopes, and flashing which is metal around chimneys and vents to prevent leaks. Together, these elements create a strong weather resistant roof.
